My 1 Word for 2016! Refresh.

So many people that I know have a hard time coming up with their 1 word of the year and some people have a couple of them (which I don’t think is the point since its supposed to be 1 word!). But there is always one word that totally stands out in the crowd for me, depending on what we have going on.

ENERGY! was my word for 2015

Why did I pick energy? Because I was at the end of my pregnancy with Sloane and it had been a rough road. I had absolutely zero energy and I desperately needed some (still do!). For me, choosing my word or feeling is about how I will approach decisions and opportunities.

In 2015 it was important to me to say yes to things that would give me more energy and to say not no, but HELL NO to things that unnecessarily zapped my energy. Getting in and out of the car took a lot of energy toward the end of that pregnancy and that 18 hour intense home birth labor REALLY took some energy but those aren’t things you can say no to. But people or activities that drained me were easy to say no to. I didn’t have to think twice!

2016 is the year of REFRESH

As I write this, baby Sloane is growing up so fast, too fast. She is 10 months old and started her first day of daycare yesterday. She is really killing it. Girlfriend can hold her own in a crowd, she’s a tough cookie and I love that about her. I had the opportunity to stay home with her a bit more than I did with Silas and now that she is a bit older she just doesn’t need me as much. Its bittersweet.

I am ready to get back to work. I have been working, taking jobs here and there since she was 6 weeks old, doing what I have been doing for awhile now, some weddings and mostly commercial production. All the while, for the last 3 years, I have been keeping a notebook (or 10!) with ideas about how I want my business and this blog to change and grow. Now I have the time to dedicate to that.

crush-2Im still not sure exactly how all of this is going to play out. I am working on getting it all organized in my head and on paper. I am so ready to take action, major action, but I want it to be just right! Here are some things you can expect.

  1. I will be Emily Hudspeth Greenwald! Which is hilarious because that has legally been my name for almost 5 years now but I am embracing calling myself that now. You will see my email signature and a few other things change. Every year I say I am doing it but this year its real!
  2. Just before I got pregnant with Silas, 3+ years ago, I had this genius idea to launch a blog/website/resource for aspiring hair/makeup/creative entrepreneurs who wanted to go pro. To take their passion and turn it into a business. In that time, I have had 2 babies! Which turns out is a even more work that I thought it would be. I kept Money Making Makeup Artist going but didn’t have the time or energy that I expected to be able to create and grow what I wanted. At times it was super overwhelming so finally, I just let it rest for a bit. The rest was perfect! It gave me the space to see what was important and what my heart wanted to create to serve this community that really lacks a resource like this. And just like that…it hit me, I need to put more of myself into that brand. So keep a look out for that blog and this blog to merge and get a new living space to share together.
  3. This blog has been around since 2008, when my life long girlfriend, Nell, told me that I needed a blog. Since I tend to try anything 3 times, and say sure why not to whatever she suggests (good call, I did look good in those bangs I cut in our dorm room back in the days of Blake Hall!), I started this blog and had NO idea why I was doing it or how it would serve me. In the last 8 years I have learned so much about blogging (and have so much more to learn) and am so grateful for the opportunities that it has given me. I mean, lets me honest, someone like me needs a space to communicate because I just have SO SO SO much to say. But in this season of my life, being 35 year old married lady with two fabulous kids, it is time once again for my business and these blogs to pivot and evolve with me.

Your invited! To come along for the ride as I, Emily Jo Hudspeth Greenwald,  breathe new life into my  business and give her a little makeover. As usual, I have no idea what I am doing but I am all about figuring it out align the way. Maybe it will be inspiring and give you the push to reinvent one of your own project.  Or maybe it will be full on train wreck. Either way I am sure there are going to be a whole bunch of learning lessons for us all.

Warning: I will be keeping it real REAL along the way. You may love it (I hope so!) or maybe not (and that’s ok too).

I want to know what is your one word from this year AND last year and how do they differ, if they do at all? My words are different but they come down to the same core principals. Choosing my actions (personal and work projects) that give more life and love to my family and business and myself. Share your thoughts in the comments!

Time to create digital products!

Like I mentioned in my last post, the one celebrating the relaunch of my website, that was one of my three goals I have been working to get crossed off in 2014.  Yay! I think it came together quite nicely, if I do say so myself. Thanks to everyone who entered the giveaway and helped me proofread and get everything perfect. Congrats to Kelley and Nell, the winners of the 2 Smashbox kits that I gave away on that post.

A few people have asked what is next? What are the other 2 big things I am trying to accomplish this year? Well, both involve April Bowles-Olin with Blacksburg Belle, a fellow creative lady entrepreneur also in VA.

One of the things I want to do is more personal than professional, I am looking to launch a lifestyle blog that is more of a creative outlet and something to do in all my non-existent spare time. Just as soon as I can sit down for 5 seconds, I am going to take April’s Creative Live Course on how to Build a Successful Creative Blog.  This is an older class of hers that I have already purchased and will be using all the info she dishes to launch the new venture. Im thinking that she is probably going to have plenty of magic sparkles of genius for me to incorporate there and also jazz up this old blog and probably Money Making Makeup Artist too!

Speaking of Money Making Makeup Artist, that is what my next project is about! That was born just before I got pregnant with Silas and was thinking of ways to work a little differently than I had been doing for years before. I am constantly getting messages on social media and emails from girls and guys who want to start their own successful businesses as stylists/ makeup artists and want to know how I have done it. I LOVE to talk business and entrepreneurship strategies! I love it as much or more some days, than doing hair and makeup, if you can believe that!

Without much a plan, I decided I was going to create a program to help people do exactly what I have done. I launched said program and it was pretty successful, but much more work than the passive stream of income I was hoping to generate. Thru some trial and error, which is the way I approach most things, I learned that what I needed first was to create some digital products that people could buy and do on their own before committing to 6 weeks of Emily bootcamp. The program was great but it was not inexpensive and required a big time commitment from both myself and the participants. It was a big chunk to take on. Which brings us to…

Why I want to learn how to create and sell digital products?

1. People want and need this information!  People are adding onto the email list MMMUA and emailing me everyday for help and I need to create a way to efficiently give them this information in a way that is easy for them to access.

2. I have already created the content! I think the program that I had created before was awesome but too much to bite off for someone just getting started. So I have reformulated it into snack sized portions so people can digest little by little and get the information as needed. If they have the digital info this way, they can do it in their own time and not need me to walk them thru it.

3. Selling digital products will help me help more people without them making a huge investment! Don’t get me wrong, I think you need to invest in yourself if you want to grow into that dream you’ve got. But I want to get this information to as many people as possible and having a big ticket 6-8 week course wasn’t getting the info into as many hands as I had hoped.

Being a freelance stylist and makeup artist is an awesome job and I am so grateful for all the cool experiences that I have had because of it. BUT I am not as young and spry as I was a decade ago and I find myself wanting to be home a bit more, especially as our family grows.

You may have caught this mentioned in the about me page of the website or on the contact page, but this guy is going to be a big brother early next year! Which means that now more than ever, I want/need to get this created so I can have this income stream to help me stay at home a bit longer with Baby #2.

Here I am, sharing some things I’ve been keeping to myself. This bump, I’ve been hiding under voluminous clothes for the last 4 months. And my last 2 goals, which if I don’t share publicly, I fear will fall by the wayside in my endless list of chores and other work. These things are important, so thank you for letting me share them with you. And for being excited with me, even on days when it feels like too much.

UPDATE: We found out the gender this weekend!!!! See that news here!

A few months ago, I applied to be in the live studio audience for April’s Creative Live Course, Create Digital Products While you Sleep.  I was shocked that I was accepted to be a part of such a cool experience! I was even more disappointed when I had to decline the opportunity due to some previous bookings and family commitments that don’t make travel to San Francisco that week possible.

Since I can’t be there in person to take this course (I am seriously so sad b/c it was kind of my birthday wish to be able to go), I am going to be camped out in front of my computer to do it as live as possible from my home office. That is the next best thing, right?

Please feel free to comment and share your thought on the website or the 2 goals that I just shared. I would love to hear words of advice or encouragement!

If you are a creative entrepreneur, blogger or just like a fun blog to follow, check out April at Blacksburg Belle. She is a delight! Must Have Products for Winter Beauty

Don’t miss this awesome giveaway! I need your support for my video scholarship entry

If you follow my personal blog or Instagram (@emilyhudspeth), you saw some snippets of my adventures in Park City, UT in January. That inspired me to create a new video of my 3 must have products for cold weather climates or winter in general. Check hat out here:

A hint…you must lock in moisture and protect yourself from the sun’s reflection on the snow.
When I got back, I had plans to record my first few videos with someone you will be seeing a bit more of. Miss Logan Greenwood is a phenomenal makeup artist who works with me on some projects. She is also building her own business and has done amazing things with the resources she learned from my business building program.

Logan will be making an appearance at least once a month in video or guest blogging forms. Show her some love and lets us know if there is anything in particular that you want to see. Logan also shares her favorite winter beauty musts. I stole a few of these for myself!

Like her Facebook page and keep an eye out for the video we made on how she did this foiling technique shown in this photo.

Influenster Relaunch!

Last Friday, I posted about Influenster, and you may be thinking what is that? Well, to get the most information, you can head over here to their “about” page. They do a pretty good job of giving you the run down.

So far I have gotten 3 Influenster Vox Boxes, 2 since the relaunch. I got the Beauty Vox Box first, which you can see here. Then I got the Blogger Vox Box, which I am still working on the post for (coming soon!) and last week I got the Crest White Strips box. I will be following up on that one when I am done with my 20 days of whitening.
Do you think you have what it takes be an Influenster? If so, I have 5 invites to give out. So, leave me a comment with your email and I will send you an invite to be an Influenster. Remember, its not all free products and swag. You do have to do a little work and flex your influential muscles. If that sounds nice, leave me a comment and I will hook you up!
